For many young girls, especially those who have experienced trauma or harmful cultural practices, sports become a safe and healing space. Soweto Academy Foundation’s sports programs — including volleyball, football, and basketball — are among the strongest in the region. But beyond medals and rankings, these programs provide emotional healing, confidence, and community support for vulnerable girls.
Volleyball has been a major success story, producing Olympians and earning national recognition. For girls who once lacked direction or confidence, the volleyball court becomes a place of belonging and identity. Coaches not only train the girls physically but also mentor them emotionally, encouraging strength, discipline, and self-belief. The success of our teams proves that talent thrives when opportunity is provided.
Football plays an equally important role, especially for Maasai girls recovering from the trauma of FGM and early forced marriages. On the field, they rediscover joy, safety, and friendship. The freedom to run, laugh, and play allows them to reclaim the childhood that was taken away from them. Football teaches teamwork, leadership, and resilience — qualities that help these girls heal and rebuild their lives.
Basketball programs empower girls to stay active, healthy, and confident. Through every match, the girls learn to trust themselves, respect others, and take pride in their abilities. Sports give them the courage to dream beyond societal limitations and stereotypes. For many, it becomes the first step toward a life filled with possibility and dignity.
