Inside Our Hydroponics & Technical Training Programs

A strong community is built on skills, innovation, and opportunity. At Soweto Academy Foundation, we are committed to empowering youth with practical, sustainable skills that can open pathways to economic independence. Our hydroponics, aquaculture, poultry farming, knitting, and tailoring programs are designed to equip learners with hands-on experience that meets real-world needs.

The hydroponics project teaches students how to grow crops using limited space — a game-changing method in crowded informal settlements. With water-efficient techniques and optimized growth systems, students learn how to produce fresh vegetables that support school meals and community food supply. These skills prepare them for future agribusiness opportunities.

Aquaculture and poultry farming programs further strengthen food security while offering students valuable agricultural knowledge. By learning how to rear fish and poultry, youth gain entrepreneurial skills that can transform household income. They also develop a strong understanding of sustainable farming, nutrition, and community resilience.

For girls who may never access formal technical institutions, our knitting and tailoring programs offer a lifeline. Through garment production and creation of sanitary towels, vulnerable girls gain employable skills that provide immediate income opportunities. They also produce school uniforms, reducing financial burdens for families and strengthening community unity.

These skill-based programs prepare young people not only for jobs but for leadership, innovation, and long-term stability. With practical training comes confidence — and with confidence comes the power to create change.
